Betting on sides and totals for major sporting events such as baseball, basketball and football are the most common sports book bets. However, many sports books also offer proposition bets if you want to gamble on other sports such as golf, tennis, boxing and racing. The two most common prop betting methods are betting to win an event and match up betting which puts one individual against another.
Refer to Wikipedia, Sports betting is the activity of predicting sports results and placing a wager on the outcome. The frequency of sports bet upon varies by culture, with the vast majority of bets being placed on association football, American football, basketball, baseball, hockey, track cycling, auto racing, mixed martial arts, and boxing at both the amateur and professional levels. Sports betting can also extend to non-athletic events, such as reality show contests and political elections, and non-human contests such as horse racing, greyhound racing, and illegal, underground dog fighting.
Betting in events
Betting to win an event is the most common way to wager on an individual competing for a non-team title such as in the US Open or the Masters. There are many non-team title events throughout the year which gives sports fans many opportunities to place these types of wagers. You can win big on these types of bets as well if you place your wager at the right time.
Just as regular sports bets can benefit from futures, betting to win can benefit as well. Placing bets in the NFL preseason when the odds have not changed yet to reflect the most recent wins and losses can get you a bigger win than if you waited until the odds for your team went up. The same is true for betting to win, placing bets at the beginning of a season or tournament can often get you a bigger win when the odds for the favorite player are no as high.
Betting to win also allows you to place a wager on the field. Most commonly seen in horse racing but also available in other non team sports all players without specific odds are included in the field. Odds are usually pretty high but if any person or horse in the field wins your payout will be big.
Match up betting is another way to bet on non team sports. Match up betting is another alternative to betting on a team winner and involves betting on individuals who play each other head to head such as in a tennis match or race. Match up betting is based on a money line which is basically the odds of one player winning over the other. If you want to participate in match up betting you bet an amount on one person and the amount you can win based on how likely the person is to win. You have to wager more to win less for favorites and wager less to win more for the underdog.
